Week 8

Greetings 1C families,

We loved having our grandparents in class on Friday! Our time together was spent attending an assembly and doing a fun activity with our grandparents. Thank you to all of the grandparents who joined us for this special day.

Writing/Grammar: This week we will begin learning about verbs! Students will learn that a verb is a word that does an action or shows a state of being. This means that a verb tells something that we do or describes what we are.

Spalding: 
Please see below the spelling words for this week. We will only have 20 words this week as we have no school on Friday. We will review on Wednesday and test on Thursday. Please practice saying the phonograms each night.

Math: This week we will continue to explore subtraction.  We will solve subtraction number stories, number bonds and find the related addition sentences.  We will continue to use manipulatives to show our subtraction stories.

Literature: The students are enjoying getting to know Owl as we read Owl at Home. We will read chapters 3 and 4 entitled “Tear Water Tea” and “Upstairs Downstairs”. Please ask your child what happens in each of these chapters!

History:  
This week in history we are finishing up our Mesopotamia unit. Monday will be a class review day and Wednesday, September 26th will be the Mesopotamia assessment. A review sheet will be sent home on Monday, September 24th


Science: We will discuss how to care for the habitats that we have learned about by reading a story about "Freddie the Fish" and how his home was destroyed by pollution and poor care for our environment. We will also read a scientist biography about Rachel Carson and learn about how she helped to lessen habitat destruction.

Homework survey results: Thank you to those of you who took the time to offer their thoughts by completing the homework survey.  We had about 20% of the grade level participate. We use this data as we plan homework assignments and value your opinion. If you find that your child's homework is taking over 45 consecutive minutes to complete, please feel free to discontinue for the evening and write us a note.  Thank you!

Writing/Grammar: We will write and read about sections of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Students will practice writing in complete sentences that include capital letter and punctuation marks. We will focus on writing with our best and most proper Spalding handwriting. 

Spalding: Please see below the spelling words for this week. A list of all 30 words will also be sent home on Monday to keep for the week. Please practice saying the phonograms each night.

Math: All of our hard work on addition over the past month has paid off because this week we get to begin learning about subtraction! We will practice taking numbers away, counting down, creating subtraction stories, and solving subtraction sentences. On Wednesday we will have math centers and will get to participate in some hands on activities to practice subtraction. On Thursday we will complete a cumulative assessment of on units 1-3 and on Friday we will take a subtraction quiz.

Literature: We will begin our first novel this week; Owl at Home! We are looking forward to meeting Owl and going on many adventures with him.  Please ensure that your child brings a copy of this book to school with them.  Thank you!

History: In History this week the students will continue learning about the first civilization in Mesopotamia. They will learn about who Giglamesh was and why he is important, along with laws and rules Mesopotamian people had to follow.

Science: This week we will finish our unit on habitats! We will take a habitat test on Tuesday. We will send home an optional review sheet on Monday. After taking the assessment on habitats, we will begin a new unit on the animals and the food chain! We will begin learning all about carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores and how they coexist with one another in an environment.

Week 6

Greetings 1C families,

Although it was a short week, we still managed to engage in plenty of learning! The students have become masters of their 7 continents and enjoyed singing their 7 continents song throughout the day.  Ask them to sing the sweet tune to you this week! We are looking forward to starting math and reading groups this week!  Thank you for considering this important volunteer opportunity.

Dress Code Reminders: Here are a few dress code reminders to ensure compliance with our Great Hearts Family Handbook. Thank you!
-Shirts tucked in with a belt
- Hair accessories must be school colors and nail polish must be nude or light pink
- Hair must be above the top of the shirt collar. Hair should be styled so that it does not fall below the eyebrows or past the midpoint of the ear.
-If jewelry is worn, it must be religious in nature.

Math: We are excited to begin math groups this week! Please sign-up for a spot to volunteer if you haven’t done so already.  This week we will continue to strengthen our addition skills as we practice various methods for adding.  We will have a test on Tuesday and Friday.

Science: This week we will study our last two habitats! We will learn about rain forests and ponds. We will compare and contrast the types of habitats that we have learned and discuss what kinds of plants and animals live in different environments. We will also begin reviewing for our first science test coming next week. An optional review sheet will be sent home before we take the test. 

Literature: We will finish our Cinderella around the world stories by reading the Chinese Cinderella.  Students will select their favorite Cinderella version and create their very own Cinderella shoe!   We will begin reading Owl at Home by Arnold Lobel on Monday, September 17th
 so please ensure your child brings their book to school by then. Thank you!

History: This week we are excited to begin our new chapter on Mesopotamia. Now that we have learned what the seven continents are, we can learn about what happened on those continents. Toward the end of the week we will be doing a fun cuneiform project.

Week 5

Just like that we have finished the first month of first grade! This month has been filled with learning and creating habits for success at school. Thank you for all of your help and support as we have adjusted to the new school year.  As we move forward, please know my door is always open with any questions or concerns you may have.



On Friday we celebrated the virtue of the month award winner, Greyson! Greyson has demonstrated responsibility all month long and we are thankful for her.  Way to go Greyson!

Math: We will finish our chapter on number stories  with a review day on Tuesday and  taking a test on Wednesday. Next, we will start a new chapter on addition facts this and practice completing various problems using number bonds and pictorial images.

Science: This week we will learn about three more habitats: the prairie, a meadow, and the arctic. We will continue to observe and reflect upon the different types of plants and animals that live and survive in these habitats. 


Literature: We will be exploring Cinderella stories from around the world! We will read the western Cinderella, the Korean Cinderella, and the Egyptian Cinderella.  In a few weeks, we will begin reading Owl at Home by Arnold Lobel.  Please ensure that your child has this book and brings it to school.  Thank you!


History: We will be finishing up geography this week by reviewing what we have learned this month and learning a few new definitions such as, equator, northern and southern hemisphere, and the north and south pole.
