Week 30

Good Afternoon 1C Families,

It has been a great start to the fourth quarter! On an exciting note, students are showing their best work as they work hard to create their very own class book.  Additional books will be available for purchase if you would like your child to have a copy as a memento.  An order form was sent home last Thursday if you would like to purchase one. Please return the order form no later than Thursday, March 28th as payments will not be accepted after the deadline. I look forward to seeing the each child's beautiful creation!

Announcements


Poetry recitations are this Friday! Don't forget to practice. 

Greetings families,

Due to various scheduling conflicts,  all P.E. classes will take place outside for the next several weeks. As the temperatures heat up, please send a water bottle to school with your children.  We will be sure to give students water breaks during P.E. If your child requires sunscreen, please apply it before school starts. Students may also wear a hat (free of pop-culture) during P.E. Feel free to reach out to us (Coach Warren K-2) (Coach Gethings 3-5) with any questions. Have a great day and Go Chargers!

Grammar: We will continue to learn about adverbs this week. An adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. 

Math: This week we will be exploring division.  A great way to practice at home is to give your child a number of objects and have your child divide them into equal groups.

Literature:  We will continue to read and finish George the Drummer Boy. The next and final book we will read is My Father’s Dragon. Please have your child bring this book by Monday, April 1st. Thank you!

History: Students will learn about the 13 colonies, taxation and the Boston Tea Party as we lead up to teaching about the American Revolution.

Science: This week we will begin a new unit on Astronomy. We will work together to describe, draw, and write about the differences between day and night. We will also learn about the sun and its place in our solar system.

Grammar: We will begin a new unit this week on adverbs. An adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. We will practice writing sentences with adverbs and identifying the adverbs within other sentences.


Math: We will review double digit addition, double digit subtraction and multiplication to ensure mastery of these skills.


Literature:  This week we will read George the Drummer Boy which offers the reverse perspective from Sam the Minuteman at the battle of Lexington and Concord.


History: This week we will learn about key aspects of Puritan life and understand that other colonies sprang from Massachusetts. We will review and take an assessment on Friday.  A review guide will be sent home on Tuesday.


Science: This week we will continue to learn about rocks and minerals. We will review the three types of rocks learned before break: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. We will explore the many materials, items, and products that are made up of minerals. On Thursday, we will pretend to be geologists and will conduct a special rock investigation! Please check your child's green folders on Tuesday for specific instructions regarding this activity.

Field Trip Information


  •          Please ensure that your child arrives to school on time as we will be leaving at 8:20 am on Friday, March 8th. 
  •          Please have your child wear sunscreen and bring a water bottle labeled with their name and class (1C).
  •          Please have your child bring a disposable sack lunch labeled with their name and class (1C).
  •          Due to the Gardens food policy, we will be unable to have a snack before lunch.  Please ensure that your child has a full breakfast. We will still have afternoon snack when we return to school. 
  •          We will not be visiting the gift shop so your child will not need any money.

Week 28

Announcements: First Grade will be taking a field trip to the Desert Botanical Gardens this Friday, March 8th! We will travel by charter bus and depart Archway Arete at 8:15am and return to the school approximately at 1:00pm. On the day of the field trip, please have your child bring a completely disposable sack lunch, and a disposable water bottle. Please contact me regarding any specific dietary or medical needs.

Writing: Copy work and narration exercises will be from How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell and The Happy Hollisters by Jerry West. We will also review abbreviations.

Grammar: Students will be assessed on all 70 phonograms throughout the week. We will also practice writing complete sentences (capital letter, punctuation mark, noun, verb) both prompted from the board and unprompted with only a topic and/or question given. 

Math: We will continue to work with equal groups as we turn them into multiplication equations.  It is common for this new skill to be confused with addition (i.e. a student writing 3X4=7). Please take the time to show your child the differences. This is a great time to use manipulatives at home!

Literature:  We will finish reading Sam the Minuteman.  This selection is historical fiction and takes place during the battle of Lexington and Concord.  Some mature topics regarding war, injury from battle and death are briefly mentioned.   We encourage families to read and review these topics with their children.  Thank you!

History: This week we will learn about slaves and the Puritan colonies.  After the break we will do a review and take an assessment.

Science: This week we will start a new unit in science! We will be learning all about rocks and their different forms including sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous.
