Music Concert: Our Spring Concert is this week! It will be at Higley Center for the Performing Arts on May 1st.  Students’ attire for our performances is NOT school uniform. Gentlemen are expected to wear a plain white dress shirt, black pants, black socks and black closed toed shoes. Solid dark colored vests and ties are optional for gentlemen. Ladies are expected to wear a white top, black skirt, black tights and black closed toed shoes. Writing: Copy work and narration exercises will be from The Nightingale and The Glow Worm poems by William Cowper as well as Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. 

Grammar: This week we will be learning about pronouns. A pronoun is a word that is used in the place of a noun. We will learn these pronouns: I, me, my, mine, you, your, yours, he, him his, she, her, hers, it, and its. We will practice reading them, identifying them, and using them in a sentence, both orally and written

Math: We will continue to explore numbers 1-100 as we identify 1 more, 1 less, 10 more and 10 less.  We will also work to manipulate numbers into various parts and order the numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest.


Literature: We will read chapters 4-5 in my Father’s Dragon as we retell and respond to what we have read.


History: We will continue to journey westward as we learn about Sacagawea’s influence on the Lewis and Clark expedition.  On Friday, we will make a lap book page to show what we have learned about Lewis and Clark.
Science: This week we will continue our exploration in to the solar system. We will be studying Saturn and Uranus this week. We will compare and contrast Saturn and Uranus to see how a day on their planet might be like in terms of time, temperature, size, and weather.

Spring Concert: Our Spring Concert is quickly approaching! It will be at Higley Center for the Performing Arts on May 1st.  Students’ attire for our performances is NOT school uniform. Gentlemen are expected to wear a white dress shirt, black pants, black socks and black closed toed shoes. Solid dark colored vests and ties are optional for gentlemen. Ladies are expected to wear a white top, black skirt and black closed toed shoes. Please have your 1st graders at Higley Center for the Performing Arts by 5:00pm. THANK YOU to Mrs. Nicole Burns for putting on a concert clothing exchange. She has collected concert attire from students who have outgrown their concert clothes. Grammar: This week we will be learning about transition words. Students will learn that transition words are used to help connect ideas, sentences, and events together so that a story can be told. Transition words help stories have a clear beginning, middle, and end. We will practice using and identifying transition words in sentences.

Literature: We will read chapters 4-5 in my Father’s Dragon as we retell and respond to what we have read.

History: We will begin our westward expansion unit.  Students will learn about Daniel Boone, The Louisiana Purchase and the Louis and Clark expedition.

Science: This week we will continue our exploration in to the solar system. We will be studying Mars and Jupiter this week. We will compare and contrast Mars and Jupiter to see how a day on their planet might be like in terms of time, temperature, size, and weather.

Grammar: This week we will learn about and practice using contractions and compound words. A contraction is when two words are shortened in to one word using an apostrophe. A compound words is when two or more words the have their own meanings are combined to make one new word, often with a different meaning. 


Literature: We will continue to read My Father’s Dragon. Early on in the week, students will bring home a brown paper bag to fill with a few items that they would take with them on a journey to Wild Island!


Math: We will dive back into number sense as we explore numbers 50-100. Students will decompose numbers as they show how many tens and ones are in each number.


History: We will finish our unit on the American Revolution by playing a review game on Monday.  We will take a unit test on Wednesday. A review sheet will be sent home on Monday.



Science: This week we will begin a deeper exploration in to the solar system. We will start by studying Mercury and Venus. We will compare and contrast Mercury and Venus to see how a day on their planet might be like in terms of time, temperature, size, and weather.

Hello Archway Arete Family! Fine Arts and French Night is Wednesday, April 10th  from 5:30 to 7:30. Please bring your friends and family for a night of celebrating our student’s achievements in Art and French! Art will be displayed on the walls by classrooms, French videos and performances will take place in the MPR, and there will be mini art lessons in the art room. Light refreshments will be served on the playground courtyard by our lovely PSO. Excited to see you there!

Due to various scheduling conflicts, all P.E. classes will take place outside for the next several weeks. As the temperatures heat up, please send a water bottle to school with your child/ren.  We will be sure to give students water breaks during P.E. If your child requires sunscreen, please apply it before school starts. Students may also wear a hat (free of pop-culture) during P.E. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions. Grammar: We will review all parts of speech learned so far this year in preparation for a cumulative grammar test. This will include: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and articles. We will practice identifying these words, using them in speech, and writing them in sentences.  

Literature: We will finish our folk tales around the world unit and will begin to read My Father’s Dragon on Friday. Please have your child bring in their copy this week!

Math: This week we will be learning time to the hour and half hour. We will learn how to read a digital and analog clock as well as compare the length it takes to complete various activities. It may be fun to discuss with your child the times that your family does certain things and hwo to tell that time on the clock (i.e. dinner is at 5:30 pm).

History: This week we will learn about the birth of our country and the father of our country, George Washington. We will finish our unit on the American Revolution by learning about American symbols and our nation’s Capital. 


Science: This week we will be studying stars and their size, age, and color. We will look closely at constellations and even make some of our own! We will also be learning the phases of the moon. Look out for a phases of the moon song for extra fun at home practice.

Grammar: We will begin learning about the articles: "the", "a", and, "an". Students will learn how to use, identify, and differentiate between these articles in a sentence. 


Math: We will discover fractions this week as we separate objects into fourths and halves. Fractions are so fun to practice at home with food and objects!


Literature:  We will begin reading various folktales from around the world! We are also using “5 finger retell” to help us tell about what we have read. Our fingers help us remember setting, characters, problem, events (beginning, middle and end) and the solution.  Please use this strategy to retell nightly reading and for your child to share about the folktales they have read in class. Additionally, please send if your child’s copy of My Father’s Dragon.


History: We will continue to study the colonist’s journey to the American Revolution. We will learn about how the colonies united and Paul Revere’s famous midnight ride! We will also learn about the battle at Lexington and Concord and the Declaration of Independence.


Science: This week we will be studying stars and their size, age, and color. We will look closely at constellations and even make some of our own! We will also be learning the phases of the moon. Look out for a phases of the moon song for extra fun at home practice.
