Week One!

Dear 1C Families,

It was such a pleasure getting to meet all of your smiling faces on Thursday night. We are truly looking forward to a spectacular year together.

See below to get an idea of what your child's first week of first grade will look like:

In Spalding this week we will review: how to have a proper Spalding seated posture, pencil grip, the six features of writing, writing and saying our one letter phonograms, and writing our numbers.

In Writing this week we will be reading from Little House in the Big Woods and we will review how to write and copy a sentence with the basic conventions included.

In Literature this week we will be reading, discussing, writing, and drawing about many of Aesop's fables including The Boy Who Cried WolfThe Dog in the Manger, and The Fox and the Grapes. We will also be working with the book First Day Jitters as a class to discover what might be making us both nervous and excited about first grade!

In Science this week we will review what it means to be a scientist and conduct experiments. Students will learn about the steps of the scientific method and prepare to conduct their very own experiments throughout the year!

In History this week we will begin our unit on Geography by viewing and working with all kinds of maps. Students will start by thinking about their very own personal map (i.e. where they live and come from) before expanding their minds to view geography across the entire globe.

In Math this week will review how to count, read, and write numbers within 10. We will also learn all about our Rocket Math program which will allow us to practice our subtraction and addition math facts all year long. Lastly, we will practice our daily Calendar routine which will include everything from time and money to place value and measurement.

Our first Idiom will be "Sour Grapes" which refers to something a person decides in not worth having only after they find out that they cannot have the desired object.

Our first poem will be "The Caterpillar" by Christina G. Rosetti

Please let us know if there is anything else that we can do for you and your child to get this school year off to a great start!
