Week 9

Greetings 1C Families,
Week 9 marks the last week of the first quarter!  1C scholars have worked so hard and have learned so much already.  We are looking forward to a wonderful week before fall break.  Let's finish the quarter strong!

October 8th-October 12th: Fall Break
October 15th- 19th: Half days for Parent-Teacher Conferences
Monday, October 22: No school 

Homework
Nightly: Read for 15 minutes, practice poem (1 minute), practice rocket math (1 minute)

Monday: baby, well, about, men, man, for, ran, run, was ,that and math wkbk. pg. 57-58
Tuesday: his, led, lay, apple, ate, author, bread, brown, dog, eat and math wkbk. pg. 59-60
Wednesday: fast, food, jumpy, sleep, wash, yellow, nine, face, miss and Test B
Thursday: Review all 29 words and Test B 
Friday: No homework- Fall Break

Frog and Toad are Friends: We will begin our next book after Fall Break.  Please ensure that your child has their copy by then.  Thank you!

Writing/Grammar: This week we will read sections of The Frog Prince by The Grimm Brothers. We will practice answering comprehension questions using full sentences and we will practice writing complete sentences about the story. 

Spalding: 

Please see below the spelling words for this week. We will have 29 words this week. Please practice saying the phonograms each night.

Math: We will continue to learn various strategies for subtraction including counting back, using adjacent numbers and memorization of math facts.  We will take a cumulative test on Thursday and a subtraction test on Friday. 
Literature: We will finish Owl at Home this week! On Friday, we will share about our favorite part and create our own owl.  Our next book will be Frog and Toad are Friends.  Please ensure that your child brings this book to school after fall break.

History:  This week we will be begin our chapter on Ancient Egypt. We will learn where Egypt and the Nile River are located on the map, and what a Pharaoh is. We will also learn about the importance of King Tut and why he was important. 

Science: This week we will learn more about the importance of the many plants and animals found in rain forests. We will learn how we can help protect this habitat. We will learn what it means when animals become endangered or extinct. We will also study some common types of dinosaurs and discuss how they may have become extinct.
