Week 10

Welcome back 1C Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful fall break, filled with a lot of rest, friends and family! On the first day of my trip to Chicago, I came across this beautiful pumpkin in the park, what a wonderful start to fall break. I'm excited to start the second quarter and meet with you all this week!

Calendar

October 15th- 19th: Half days for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Dismissal begins at 11:45am. 
Monday, October 22: No school 
Saturday, October 27th: Book Fair at Barnes and Noble at Dana Park.  Ms. Dawson will be reading at 12:45pm-1:00pm.
Wednesday, October 31st: Read-a-thon (please see below for additional information)

Homework
Nightly: Read for 15 minutes, practice poem (1 minute), practice rocket math (1 minute)
phonograms: ee, ck, or, e, th, wh, t, oo, ow, ng


Monday: No Words. Handwriting Practice for lowercase letters a-z and math wkbk. pg. 61-64

Tuesday: We will have just 5 words today: rides, ride, tree, sick, got and math wkbk. pg. 65-68
Wednesday: north, white, spent, foot, feet, blows, blow, block, spring, river and math wkbk pg. 69-72
Thursday: Review all 15 words and Test B
Friday: Math wkbk. pg. 73-76

Announcements
Frog and Toad are Friends: We will begin our next book on Friday.  Please ensure that your child brings in their copy. Thank you!
Read-a-thon: In celebration of Read-a-thon, students are welcome to dress-up at a storybook character or a historical figure.  Costumes proposals will be sent home this week. 
Parent-Teacher Conferences: I look forward to meeting with you during conferences.  Please review your child's Quarter 1 checklist to ensure that we can discuss any questions you may have.

Academics
Poem: The Purple Cow by Gelett Burgess  Idiom: Practice Makes Perfect 

phonograms: ee, ck, or, e, th, wh, t, oo, ow, ng
Writing/Grammar: This week we will read sections of The Frog Prince by The Grimm Brothers. We will practice answering comprehension questions using full sentences and we will practice writing complete sentences about the story. 
Spalding: Please see below the spelling words for this week. We will only have 15 words this week to allow for reteaching and review of our spalding progress to set us up for a successful quarter 2! Please practice saying the phonograms each night.

Math: We will learn position words, direction words and ordinal numbers this week! We will wrap-up the week with a test over what we have learned. 
Literature: During the beginning of the week, we will read two versions Little Red Riding Hood.  The second version is the Chinese version, Lon Po PoWe will end the week by beginning to read our second book Frog and Toad are Friends.  Please ensure that your child brings their copy to school by Friday, October 19th.
History:  This week in history we will be continuing out journey through ancient Egypt. We will be learning about pyramids, mummies and ancient Egyptian writing. 
Science:   We will begin to study oceans this week! The class will complete an experiment to see which objects sink and float in fresh and salt water. We will also demonstrate how currents move through the ocean.
